01 · The Film

Everyone remembers the last year differently.

While We're Young follows a tight-knit group of friends through a year of secondary school — the exams, the falling in and out with each other, the small decisions that end up mattering more than anyone expected at the time.

It's a low-budget, character-driven independent feature. Honest performances matter more to us than polish — we want actors who remember exactly what school feels like.

This is a placeholder synopsis and character set for the site — swap in your real details whenever you're ready.

Female · 13-16

Eve

"most likely to have it all figured out"

The one who's always had a plan — until the cracks start to show. Needs to carry quiet perfectionism and the relief of finally letting go.

Lead
Male · 13-16

Jake

"most likely to make you laugh in assembly"

Class clown, first to crack a joke, last to admit anything's wrong. We need warmth underneath the comic timing.

Lead
Female · 13-16

Alice

"Sporty girl, home schooled"

Guarded, sharp, slowly letting people in.

Supporting
Male · 13-16

Alex

"most likely to leave and never look back"

The golden boy everyone expects things from — captain, top of the class — starting to wonder if any of it is actually his.

Supporting
Male · 18+

Mr. Ellis

"the form tutor who actually notices"

Weary, dry-humoured, more perceptive than the students give him credit for. A small but pivotal adult role.

Supporting
All ages

Background & Ensemble

Questions from the back row

No. We're casting for honesty over résumé — first-time actors are very welcome, especially for the student roles.
Lead and supporting student roles are written for actors who can play 11–16. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian will need to be involved in the process. Adult supporting roles are also open — see the roles section above.
Pay details are still being finalised — this is marked TBD until the budget is confirmed. We'll be upfront about it before anyone commits to anything.
Location and dates are still being locked in. Get in touch and we'll let you know as soon as they're confirmed, and whether they'd work for you.
A short slate (your name, age, where you're based) followed by the scene. Natural light, a plain background, and clear sound are all that matter — no need for a professional setup.
Yes — if more than one character feels right for you, mention that in your email and we'll take a look.
Please do. We're still building out the ensemble and background cast, and roles may change as the script develops.
